Unlock the Farmer to start farming

Farming begins with the Farmer, the NPC who lets you grow crops at your base instead of gathering wild plants. The Farmer must be rescued from her ancient vault in the Springlands before her recipes become available.

The vault is located north of the Springlands Ancient Spire. Inside, a puzzle requires you to activate three buttons scattered through the halls; once all three are active, you can enter the main room to awaken the Farmer.

Back at base, summon Emily Fray the Farmer with the Summoning Staff. She can be placed anywhere, but she must be sheltered for her crafting options to function fully.

  1. Travel to the Farmer’s vault north of the Springlands Ancient Spire.
  2. Enter the vault and activate the three buttons scattered through the halls.
  3. Head into the main room once all three buttons are active to awaken the Farmer.
  4. Return to your base and summon Emily Fray the Farmer with the Summoning Staff.
  5. Place her in a sheltered spot so her crafting options work.

Craft Farm Soil and the Seedbed

The Farmer provides the two crafting pieces that make farming possible: Farm Soil and the Seedbed. Farm Soil is made from 7x Dirt and 3x Bonemeal. The Seedbed is then made from 10x Wood, 2x Metal Scraps, and 10x Farm Soil.

Talk to the Farmer and open her crafting menu to make both. Place the finished Seedbed at your base and interact with it to reach the seedling recipes.

  1. Talk to the Farmer and open the crafting menu.
  2. Craft Farm Soil using 7x Dirt and 3x Bonemeal.
  3. Craft the Seedbed using 10x Wood, 2x Metal Scraps, and 10x Farm Soil.
  4. Place the Seedbed and interact with it to open its recipes.

Unlock and craft seedlings

A plant’s seedling recipe appears in the Seedbed only after you have gathered that plant in the wild, so you will likely not have every recipe available when you first build the Seedbed. Many recipes need one plant plus water, but the exact ingredients vary, so check each recipe before crafting.

Processing happens inside the Seedbed once the materials are added. For example, an Indigo Seedling takes ten minutes to process and yields five seedlings, while corn yields 20 corn seedlings at a time.

  1. Gather the plant you want to grow in the wild to unlock its recipe.
  2. Interact with the Seedbed and select the seedling recipe.
  3. Add the required ingredients shown in the recipe.
  4. Wait for processing to finish, then move the seedlings into your inventory.

Plant seedlings and build a field

Seedlings are planted from your hotbar: hover over the seedling and click where you want it to go. You can relocate a seedling after placing it, but once it is fully grown you must harvest it, which removes the crop and means crafting more seedlings for the next round.

You can also lay out a dedicated field. Equip the Building Hammer, select Farm Soil as the material with Ctrl+Scroll Wheel, then hold Alt and choose Terrain for the block shape; the sixth option is recommended for a field. Place the soil with room to spare for crops, then plant the seeds you crafted.

  1. Put the finished seedlings in your hotbar.
  2. Hover over a seedling and click where you want it planted.
  3. Equip the Building Hammer and select Farm Soil with Ctrl+Scroll Wheel.
  4. Hold Alt and select Terrain, using the sixth option for the field shape.
  5. Place the Farm Soil terrain, leaving plenty of room for crops.
  6. Select your crafted seeds on the toolbar and place them on the field.
  7. Harvest crops once grown, then craft more seedlings in the Seedbed.
